The impacts of climate change have already been deeply impacting our communities. From extreme weather, wildfires, to essential home needs like electricity, becoming more expensive. Unfortunately, the most vulnerable in our communities will experience these harmful changes even more than we can imagine, if we don’t act now for equitable solutions.

In Multnomah County, we have the opportunity to stand up for just solutions that recognize that climate change is intertwined with all the issues our region is facing, from housing supply and cost, economic opportunity, clean air, livable communities, and so much more. 

The Multnomah County Climate Justice Plan, was led by a steering committee of community-based organizations, including Community Energy Project, APANO, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Verde, and many more. 

The Draft Plan identifies 12 strategic and actionable goals we can move on now. Here are a few: 

• Every community member has the opportunity to contribute to climate justice in Multnomah County. 
• Every community member has access to wealth-building opportunities and green jobs. 
• Every community member has access to affordable, reliable, and safe transit, biking, and pedestrian infrastructure. 
• Every community member has access to nutritious, culturally-specific food and can participate in traditional food practices. 
• Every community member has access to affordable, clean energy. 
• Every community member is safe from the risks posed by fossil fuels and energy infrastructure. 
• Every community member has access to clean water that supports their needs and all living systems. 
• Every community member breathes clean and healthy air. 
• Every community member is resilient to extreme weather events and other climate threats. 
• Every community member has safe, healthy, and affordable housing. 
• Every community member is surrounded by and connected to nature, parks, and green infrastructure. 
• Every community member has access to the resources and underlying conditions that promote health and well-being

Fossil Fuel Companies like NW Natural are already gearing up to oppose this climate justice plan. You can help stand up for climate justice by submitting comments in support of this draft plan!
